Take back your inbox. Your mail never leaves your computer.
Sweep is a desktop app for Gmail. See what’s filling your inbox, free up storage, unsubscribe from what you never read, and set cleanup rules that run on their own, with a preview before every change and undo afterwards.
Four steps, and you stay in control the whole way.
Sign in with Google
Your browser opens Google’s own sign-in page. We never see your password. Prefer to look around first? Sweep starts on a demo mailbox.
See what’s in there
Totals appear straight away while Sweep reads message headers (sender, subject, date, size, labels) on your computer and shows who fills your inbox.
Preview a cleanup
Pick a suggestion or a ready-made rule, or write your own, and see exactly which messages it would touch. Nothing changes yet.
Apply, or undo
Apply it once, or let it run automatically. Every change is logged in Activity and can be undone.
What it does
Practical tools for the mess, not another inbox to check.
Overview
See how much mail you have, how much is unread, which Gmail tabs it lands in, and your biggest senders. Totals show immediately, even on a huge inbox.
Free up space
See how full your Google storage is and what to clear: large attachments and old promotions, social, and updates mail. Each suggestion opens a page where you choose the emails, and shows how much room you’d gain first.
Senders
Everyone who emails you and how often. Search the list, scan the whole inbox for exact totals, and act on one sender’s mail at a time.
Cleanup rules
Ready-made rules for old promotions, social notifications, big old attachments, and old updates, or build your own: label, archive, trash, or mark as read. Run a rule once or let it run automatically.
Subscriptions
Find the newsletters and senders you never open. Unsubscribe in one click when the sender supports it, or auto-archive their mail instead.
Activity and undo
Every change Sweep makes is logged, and each one can be reversed from the Activity page. Sweep moves mail to Trash but never permanently deletes anything itself.
Runs in the background
Keep Sweep in your menu bar so automatic rules keep working after you close the window. Quit it from there any time, or pause it.
Plain-English rules Optional
Describe a rule in a sentence, like “move anything from my landlord to a Housing label,” and review the draft before it’s saved. Uses your own Anthropic API key, and only that sentence is sent, never your mail.
Private by design
The app runs on your computer. There is no Sweep server that holds your mail.
Your mail goes straight from Google to your computer. We don’t receive, store, or see it.
The app reads message headers only, not the body of your emails.
Your sign-in is encrypted with your system’s keychain, and you can disconnect at any time.
Plain-English rules are off unless you add your own Anthropic key. Even then, only the sentence you type is sent.
No ads, no selling data, no analytics on your mail.
Sweep is in development and not yet available to download. Public release depends on Google’s review of the app, which is in progress.
Installer downloads will appear here when the app is ready.
Questions
Does anyone see my email?
No. The app talks directly between your computer and Google. We run no server that receives your mail.
What permission does it ask Google for?
Permission to read and modify your Gmail so it can apply labels, archive, and move mail to Trash, plus a minimal permission to read your storage usage. It does not ask to send mail, delete it permanently, or read your Drive files.
Will it delete my email?
Only if you apply a rule or cleanup that moves mail to Trash, and you see what it will move first. Gmail keeps Trash for 30 days, so you can undo from the Activity page. Space is freed when Gmail empties Trash, or right away if you empty it yourself.
Can I undo changes?
Yes. Each change is logged, and you can undo it from the Activity page.
Do automatic rules need the app open?
They run while Sweep is open. Turn on “Keep running” and Sweep stays in your menu bar after you close the window, so they keep working.
Is the plain-English rule feature required?
No. It’s optional and off by default. If you add your own Anthropic API key, Sweep sends the sentence you type to Anthropic to draft a rule. It never sends your mail, and you review the draft before it’s saved.
Which providers and systems work?
Gmail on macOS is first. Outlook and other platforms are planned.
